just minding me business having a smoke out front at 1 am and some fuckhead decides to steal a bike where i can see him...
dude just cherry picked one at the flat dragged it off to park and broke the lock off
goddamnit..now i have to talk to cops...
called the cops whilst i could still hear him bashing the lock apart
(they actually turned up within minutes...i was kinda impressed....he’d still fucked off by then and they probably wont find him tho)
anyhoo...as a psa... if you have a bike with this kinda lock
shitty fucking lock...get a better one
fucking get a chain lock..... you can break those just by repeatedly bashing the spokes into it....they are pretty fucking crap...

I have one of those solid metal bar-type bike locks!
Different brand to this one, but this type of thing:

I don’t think so! I haven’t used the lock in years though...we used to live in town and we now semi-live in the country a few mins from a different town, so there’s no need for me to use it much!

We never see those sorts of bike locks here in the US. Seriously people would just swing by, throw the bikes in a truck, and then drive off to deal with them at their leisure.
Even chains aren’t recommended here (except perhaps for ridiculously heavy linked chains) , it would take someone a few seconds with a bolt cutter to free the bike. Generally it’s recommended you use a U - lock, especially if the bike is going to be somewhere without a lot of people or overnight. Those can still be broken with the right tool, but generally someone else will be easier. For extra security, some people recommend using both a U- lock and a chain, because they will require two different tools to break, which is too much trouble for all but the most valuable bikes to steal.

not sure if you have this model, but I’ve seen similar approaches when locks have those cylinder keys

I’m surprised by the amount of bicycles that end up in the canals. I was watching some Aussie on YouTube whose channel is called ‘Bondi Treasure Hunter’ and every week he pulls up bike after bike after bike. And then there’s the officials from the city on barges, pulling out piles of bikes from the canals. Are those things extremely cheap over there or are people just puckering anuses? Don’t answer that question - I think I already know the answer...

Mine’s not a Masterlock...I think it’s some CCM-branded lock?
It does have the cylindrical keys though...

Many of the u-locks with a barrel lock can be defeated with a bic pen cap.
https://www.engadget.com/2004-09-14-kryptonite-evolution-2000-u-lock-hacked-by-a-bic-pen.html
It’s also ridiculously
fast and easy
to break one with a variety of tools if it’s not used correctly.

Easier to break than you think. See my reply to farscythe.

Maybe I should look into a chain....lol

Got a pen?
It would suck to find out your lock could be picked with a pen, but it would also be really fun to use a pen to pick a lock.

My Bianchi Giro was stolen from a locked storage closet at an apartment. Just because your bicycle is behind a locked door, don’t assume it is safe from theft.
Hindsight tells me that I should have used an alarm on the door, which I already
poss
essed. The alarm is battery powered and can be hung on door knobs, str
apped to posts or
tubes and used as a personal alarm. The siren is ear
blasting, leave the room, loud. I used this alarm when I traveled
on my highly customized
motorcycle, attaching it to the fork leg. As far as I know, no one ever messed with it, but it gave me a little more peace of mind
If I street parked a bicycle overnight, I would certainly use something like this.

It’s been years since I saw a lock of that style. It was built on to the bike , mounted on the frame by the rear tire. It was thin aluminum and mostly to keep honest people honest , a padlock and chain provided real security .
In places like Chicago and New York City I saw bikes with a U-lock attaching them to a pole, plus a cable woven all around through the frame and rear wheel, plus the front wheel and/or seat removed . I’ve also heard multiple stories about people cutting their own locks off with power tools (broken , lost key, etc) and being upset that nobody walking past paid any attention . Kind of like car alarms.

tbh those locks come standard on city bikes..some are beefier...but really...you want to upgrade to something better asap

well that sucks...
and yeah i dont street park mine over night...course i also dont lock it usually....its main security is that you cant see it from the street... (hell..you cant see it from my backyard till you damn near trip over it....its dark out there

You can’t be home all the time to keep an eye on it, so it might be a good idea to lock it. I’ ve had a Honda 125 Elsinore stolen from a locked shed in my yard, a friend had his Gary Fisher MTB stolen from his shed. Heck, one night around 2:00 am, my German Shepard alerts me to something going on. I look out side, and their is a group of teens pushing my 1962 Beetle out of the driveway. I put the dog on them.
Lock your bike. It’s cheap insurance.

You are right
Tho tbh if I’m not at home I’m probably on the bike anyway...not like I have a car :p
But still I should lock it....some old habits from growing up in the sticks are hard to shake

I moved to the sticks, on a private road, now I don’t lock my shed or my truck...... but we do have a secur ity camera set up at the road entrance.
